6 Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Garden Room

Having a garden room is a wonderful addition to any home, providing a tranquil space to relax, work, or entertain. However, like any other part of your property, it requires regular maintenance to keep it in top condition. It is important to treat your garden studio like an extension of your own home, particularly in the colder winter months. This means keeping it well ventilated (allowing fresh air to circulate for a couple of hours a day) and maintaining a minimum temperature of 18 degrees to avoid the formation of damp.

In this article, we'll explore six essential tips for maintaining your garden room so you can enjoy it for years to come.

Regular Cleaning

Dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate over time, so it's essential to regularly clean your garden room. Sweep the floors, wipe down surfaces, and dust any furniture or decor items. Pay special attention to windows and doors, as they can quickly gather grime.

For general cleaning of timber cladding use warm soapy water but try not to completely soak the boards as this may cause them to swell. At Podhouse we specify Natural European Larch for our garden rooms, this species of timber does not need any special treatment due to its durability and natural resistance to decay. However, like all timber cladding, over time the appearance will fade to a silvery grey colour due to UV exposure. If you want to slow down this process and retain the original colour for longer, we recommend using OSMO UV protection oil which should be applied every 3-4 years.

Check for Leaks

Inspect your garden room for any signs of leaks or water damage. Check the roof, windows, and doors for cracks or gaps where water could seep in. Repair any leaks promptly to prevent further damage to your structure.

Maintain the Garden

If your garden room is surrounded by greenery, don't forget to maintain the garden itself. Regularly prune plants, mow the lawn, and remove any weeds or dead foliage. A well-kept garden will enhance the overall appearance of your garden room.

Pest Control

Keep an eye out for pests such as ants or rodents, which can cause damage to your garden room. Use traps, repellents, or natural deterrents to keep pests at bay, and address any infestations promptly.

Seasonal Maintenance

Perform seasonal maintenance tasks to keep your garden room in top shape throughout the year. This may include cleaning gutters, resealing surfaces, or applying fresh coats of paint or stain as needed. We recommend that any painted timber cladding is touched up every 3-6 years, with a minimum of two coats. Always refer to the operation and maintenance information provided by us on completion.

Keep it Personal

Finally, don't forget to personalise your garden room to make it truly your own. Add comfortable furniture, decorative accents, and personal touches that reflect your style and personality. A well-loved space is a joy to maintain and enjoy.

By following these six essential tips for maintaining your garden room, you can ensure that it remains a beautiful and functional space for years to come. With regular care and attention, your garden room will continue to be a peaceful retreat and an extension of your home's living space.
